Soapstone: Natural stone
Pros/cons:
- Heat resistant
- Stain resistant, but especially tough stains won't wash away
- Holds up to chemicals
- Hygienic
- Expensive
- More likely to dent than marble and granite
- Can scratch and chip, though you can finely sand small scratches and coat with mineral oil
- Less common than granite
- Optional periodic application of mineral oil will darken the counter and enhance natural aging process
- Higher maintenance if you oil it
How to clean and maintain soapstone:
- Use mild soap and water
- Can use Ajax or Comet as well
- Optional mineral oil application to darken color: multiple times in first year, then darker color should become permanent (also can use beeswax and linseed mixture for same darkening effect)
- If using mineral oil, avoid cleaners with harsh chemicals because they will undo the oil process
